Thanks Charles and a very Happy Xmas to you!
Thank you, Mark. What a wonderful message. I wished I lived where I could attend the church you pastor!
Thankss Rene! and so do I.
I love this!! And it's so much more powerful and legitimate coming from an ordained pastor. Thank you, Mark!
Thanks Lori! I suspect, minister or not, many of us have had or heard similar conversations. It's a bit sad, don't you think. At any rate, I thought this might, in some small way, help point out the silliness of the whole thing.
Cracks me up, as little about Christmas has anything to do with the birth of Christ, including the date.
Kiku - so true!
Other winter holidays that war on Christmas, let's see...There's Hanukkah, when Jesus, who was Jewish, was at the Temple in Jerusalem (John 10:22). December 6th honors a Christian leader, Nicholas, known for generosity. On December 26th we recall the first Christian marytr, Stephen. Christmas, when we commemorate the Incarnation, isn't just a single holy day, but a season preceded by the season of Advent and leading up to Epiphany. Or is it un-Christian to celebrate more than one day? Then there's Kwanzaa, a cultural holiday, not a religious holiday, not unlike, say, the Fourth of July or President's Day. Guess celebrating Independence Day is un-Christian, right? Don't forget the beginning of the civil year, also not a religious holiday. Those congregations that don't follow Popish liturgical calendars better not have a Watchnight service on New Year's Eve.But if you don't want to be happy for more than one holiday, that's fine. Whether you count one day as better than others or all days alike it's okay(Romans 14:5). Imagine that, the Bible says it's okay for us to have differing opinions! Crazy talk, I know.
quacks5 - well said!
WEIRD, MERRY CHRISTMAS YOU CAN'T CHANGE ANOTHERS BELIEFS ONLY GOD JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN. CHRISTMAS HAS BECOME PAGAN IN MANY WAYS AND IT'S EVERYONES FAULT NOT JUST CHRISTIANS OR OTHERS IT'S ALL OF US IN THIS NATION WHO WANT TOO MUCH. CHRISTMAS SHOULD BE ABOUT CHRIST AND THE GIFT HE GAVE US, ETERNAL LIFE IF WE ACCEPT AND FOLLOW HIM lINDA GULLETT
Linda - greed (wanting too much) is certainly among the most devastating attitudes in the US. Thanks for your comment.
"the Christian left", Didn't know there was such a thing. For that matter, is there any religion that has a "left" side? 60 years ago, my Grandmother admonished me for using the word "Xmas". She also said it was that I was X-ing our Christ. As your cartoon states, "X" dies have roots in ancient Greek as well as Roman lives where the "X" was scribed on places where Christians could secretly meet. Remember, "X" marks the spot? However, in the United States, we mostly speak, rwad and write a form of English, not Greek or Latin. So, if we want people to remember Christ, we have to use the actual english word "Christ".I'm fairly certain that ancient Romans or Greeks would be quite confused if they saw the English word, "Christ" written or sounded out. So, now we might know how a "left" Presbyter thinks, I wonder how some of your neighbors, the Moravians, would approach this. ????Thank you.
I have to disagree with the comment that "little about Christmas has anything to do with the birth of Christ." Unfortunately our culture continues to try and water down Christmas so it doesn't have anything to do with Christ, but as Christians we should constantly strive to keep Christ at the very center of Christmas. The four Sundays in Advent are a wonderful opportunity to slow down, wait and prepare for the celebration of the birth of our Savior.
Jacob, X may not many anything to some but for many the historical association is important. The trick is trying to tell someone what they are are are not doing when they are telling you why they are doing it. At any rate, I do appreciate you taking the time to check out the video. If you want, check out The Christian Left over at www.thechristianleft.orgScott - Amen.
Hey Mark, was this a conversation you actually had? Thanks!
