Jesus, flipping tables, taking back Christianity
In many ways, this blog page is my response to what I see as a general malaise that has fallen across  Christianity in the U.S.  We have bought so far into a kumbaya, turn the other cheek, Jesus is more of a doormat than a door theology,  that we have rendered ourselves ineffectual.  We think that being nice and kind and loving to one another means not making anyone upset and being non-confrontational.  Worse yet, we have started measuring our success at being that kind of Christian by how many people 'like us' compared to how many people don't.

How we got here, I hardly know and, quite honestly, it doesn't really matter.  What does matter is that a very large number of Christians practice their faith by this misguided understanding of what love looks like.  In that kumbaya version of Christianity having an “attitude of gratitude” means possessing a disposition of constant submission to the world and those who think they rule it – turning the other cheek so many times that you no longer know if you are looking left or right.  Biblically that song is a disharmonious, disconnected and disturbing distortion of who Jesus was.

Need I remind us all that so many people didn't like Jesus that they nailed him to a tree.  Not because he was a bad person, but because he did not make nice when people distorted God's message of love.  He didn't turn the other cheek when politicians and religious leaders conspired to step on the 'least of these.'  He stood up for what was right.  He flipped tables in the name of God.  He did not lash out violently at another human being, ever, but he did lovingly confront them.  He was always motivated by love... but he did not back down, he did not sacrifice the Word of God for the comfort of humanity; he did not keep his mouth shut in the name of being nice.

For too long the people of God have suffered – for far too long.  God has claimed the meek and the poor in spirit and those who morn and those who thirst for justice and the merciful and the pure of heart and the peacemakers and those that suffer persecution for justice sake as God own, as the children of heaven.  Those who take advantage of the meek and persecute people who work for justice, have been given a pass by Christians who think that 'turn the other cheek' means to sit passively by like a doormat as they and the marginalized get stepped on, used and abused, by the powerful who wipe their feet of the world's sometimes gritty reality so that the houses that they have built on the backs of the rest of us don't get soiled with the pain, the abuse, the hatred of the world that they themselves have created.

When Jesus was confronted with people that had distorted the purpose of the house of God, he flipped tables.  When Jesus was confronted by people using God's name to dupe those who had little, who were meek, who were abused and marginalized, he flipped tables.

What makes a  peace-loving, easy-going, hippy-dippy, Jesus freak start flippin' proverbial tables?  People using God's name for false purposes.  Politician and religious leaders using religion to further marginalize 'the least of these.'  Pharasetical proclamations from 'Christian' leaders that inspire hate, division and at times violence (even if veiled in words like 'hate the sin, love the sinner).

I had had enough and so The God Article began.  I hope you too have had enough.  If you have, let me hear from you in the comment section, share this post with your friends far and wide. In the words of Bob Marley, “Get up, stand up. Don't give up the fight.” Start flippin' tables.

In the name of Jesus, people like The God Article, The Christian Left, The Progressive Christian Alliance, Those Crazy Liberals...and Conservatives are taking up the good fight.  It's time for us to not only flip the tables but to turn them.  It is time for us to take back the voice of Christianity.  It is time for followers of God to start acting like followers of God.  We must confront hate at every turn.  We must profess love in every moment.  We must see Christ in every face... and it might just take flipping a few proverbial tables.

There's an old spiritual I was taught when growing up: Ain't Got Time to Die. Check these lyrics:

'Cause when I'm helpin' the sick (I'm praisin' my Jesus)
When I'm helpin' the sick (I'm praisin' my Jesus)
When I'm helpin' the sick (I'm praisin' my Jesus)
Ain't got time to die
'Cause it takes all of my time (It takes all of my time, it takes it all)
All of my time (to praise Him)
If I don't praise Him the rocks are gonna cry out
Glory and honor, glory and honor
Ain't got time to die.

Fact is, we don't have time to die, but we certainly will if we don't get out and do something. We are called to speak strong words at time. We are called to call out the injustice and oppression. Those that do not stand up and speak out, have you no conviction? Have you no heart? You're a human, and getting angry means you care about something. Fact, is, I've had enough too. And will continually and perpetually march, not alone but together. 'Cause, if I don't the rocks gonna cry out.

Yes. And all of it done as a nonviolent spiritual champion. Everything Jesus did or asked us to do was in the spirit of complete nonviolence. In the face of the Roman Empire's physical and spiritual violence; in the face of the Religious Elite's physical and spiritual violence; in the face of the religious zealots who wanted to kill in the name of God, Jesus was nonviolent; and, demanded that take up this cross and follow him.

Dr. Higgs - absolutely! "a nonviolent spiritual champion." Amen!

...but a revolution none-the-less...
let's flip some tables together!

Preach on!
We are called to not only act as agents of grace, but also to prophetically speak truth to power.

Right on! I get so sick and tired of people telling me I'm not much of a Christian when i get so mad about things and/or a Christian is supposed to be happy, wealthy and wise. Jesus was homeless, jobless and a renegade to the society he lived in. We are suppose to follow him and not be ashamed.

Thank you for your blog. I am a Jesus freak of the table flippin' sort. I've had enough of the bigotry and hate. There is no way anyone can convince me that the Jesus I follow would ever advocate the violent attitudes of so many self-professed Christians. I am tired of being accused of being too inclusive. Where in any of the Gospels is there an account of Jesus turning anyone away? He especially welcomed the sinner and outcast and demonstrated nothing but compassion and love for all.

Amy - couldn't agree with you more! Kumbaya theology is a idealistic and false reading of the life of Jesus. You can love passionately and still be fiery passionate about defending the things that are important to God.

Robin - thanks for reading the blog, it is great to connect with other table flippers! An inclusive Gospel is a passion of mine. You might enjoy my sermon, "All Means All": http://www.thegodarticle.com/3/post/2010/10/all-means-all.html

I found this blog after Googling "Jesus flips tables" because I was pondering this very issue...

I'm really glad that there are other people out there who are angry at the injustice I see perpetrated in so many seemingly benign places, the powerful preying on the weak (and "preying" can sometimes mean simply remaining indifferent while watching others get screwed over, IMHO). That's what really gets me - watching these institutions that are supposed to HELP and SUPPORT people all too often failing them, instead. We just don't care enough about one another...but I think that's our journey, as a race: to go from "I'm not my brother's keeper" to "I willingly and lovingly accept responsibility for 'keeping' all of my brothers."

If I may make a gentle suggestion...I think part of the problem is that many good Christian people still consider themselves so beneath God, so unworthy of his great love. And it makes sense, because his love means so much to them that they worry they might fail or disappoint him - after all, it is inevitable, for we are all fallible human beings. But I say...God did not create us to be his sheep or slaves. He gave us free will and the ability to choose, even to disobey him, all with the promise that his love will never abandon us - it is unconditional. He created us to be his children, his companions...his friends! His equals in SPIRIT, if not power and grace.

I feel I cannot comment on the nature of Jesus' divinity...but it's not hard to see that he surely considered himself God's equal in spirit. He celebrated Love and spoke his truth and chose his battles wisely. He made a statement when he needed to, and he walked so fearlessly to the cross because he believed in HIMSELF, as well as in God's love... I feel we must do that, too, if we are to effect any real change. We must somehow stop feeling unworthy of God's love so that we may gain the courage to act as passionately and courageously as Jesus did in support of his fellow human beings.

i am constantly told i care too much, too loudly, too deeply, too passionately, too whatever. i cannot abide caring too silently and call myself a christian who believes and follows in my all too human way the teachings of Christ. thank you, mark, for putting into words the very thing i try and fail to say so often. we are faced daily, around the entire world at the failure of ourselves as a human race to care for each other. hunger, homelessness, abuse, greed, disease, homophobia, racism, sexism, tyranny, want of all kinds. our brothers and sisters need our voices raised, and if flipping tables gets it done, so be it. kickin' work!!! :-)

thank you so very much for such a wonderful article about the Jesus I worship and try to live by. As a Christian man who happens to be gay, I have been persecuted by many who say they know Jesus, but even in their persecution they have scratched their head many of times as God has used me, worked through me and continues to amaze others as the least of these have been cared for. I was used to create an organization that now provides nearly 200 Million in aid annually to the poorest of the poor and i have been used to shake the trees so others could help others. And when they found out about me, they often kicked me to the curb, only to find Jesus taking me to my next destination. My heart to help others to the level and compassion that exists in it is much more than me, but God who lives in me as He has shown me things that I have enlightend by while truly making me accountable for all at the same time. He has never left me or forsaken me, even when others who get caught up in my sexuality have, while God looks at me so differently I know, I just wish others could see what God sees. Sometimes the hate has been so severe I wondered where and how God would take me to my next destination but each time I have not needed a thing as He simply took care of me each step of the way while continuing to work and do incredible things, while I get to see the least of these get what God wants to provide. We cannot die and we need to stand up for justice as the Lord says in Isaiah that He will be our rear God when we go on behalf of the poor. If I have a testimony it is that God has taken care of me in my darkest and most fullfilling moments. thanks for letting me share my testimony.

I want you to know that I am thankful for the God article as it has been so very helpful to know that there are many of us and we are not alone in this world who have been called to serve others.

Anarchic furniture rearranging: gotta love how Jesus does it. ;) The whole history of Earth, of the universe for that matter, looks a lot like that: every so often something comes along to upset the local, global, or cosmic apple cart (although the dinosaurs took extreme exception to one of the latest episodes), but good always comes out of it.
