Koch, Koch Brothers, Koch Industries, Koch brands, boycott
That's right.  We are all addicted to Koch.  That's Koch Industries – the infamous Koch (pronounced 'coke') Brothers.

For those who may not be familiar with these fine (I use the term loosely) brothers, let me give you a little background.  Let's see... they are filthy rich... no, stinking, filthy rich.  And they got that way because YOU (and the rest of we minions) buy their stuff.  You might be asking yourself at this point, “Self? What do they do with their butt loads of money?” If you don't mind, I'll take this one.

They buy political influence. That's right.  They buy political influence with your money because you needed to drink water from a disposable Dixie cup.  OK, that may be a bit overstated, but that really is about it in a nutshell.

They push a Libertarian agenda (very low taxes, very little social services, very little corporate regulations, nearly no environmental regulations, to name a few) via the Republican party and now also through their marionettes  known as the Tea Party.  And I'm sure it is only coincidence that the policies they push would also benefit their mega-conglomeration known as Koch Industries.

As reported by the New Yorker, “the Kochs vastly outdid ExxonMobil in giving money to organizations fighting legislation related to climate change, underwriting a huge network of foundations, think tanks, and political front groups. Indeed, the brothers have funded opposition campaigns against so many Obama Administration policies—from health-care reform to the economic-stimulus program—that, in political circles, their ideological network is known as the Kochtopus.”

It's time to put a stop to the Kochtopus.  Let's start by going cold turkey with our Koch addiction. Join Boycott and Defeat Koch Industries on Facebook.  According to their list, here's some of the brands to boycott:

Koch Industry Gasoline:
Chevron
Union
Union 76
Conoco

Koch Industry/Georgia-Pacific Products:
Angel Soft toilet paper
Brawny paper towels
Dixie plates, bowls, napkins and cups
Mardi Gras napkins and towels
Quilted Northern toilet paper
Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper
Sparkle napkins
Vanity fair napkins
Zee napkins

POLARGUARD® fiber and
LYCRA® fiber

Georgia Pacific Building products

That's just the tip of the Koch iceberg.  Check out a more complete listing from their own page worldofkoch.com. (UPDATE: As of the end of February 2011, worldofkoch.com has been taken down with no explanation. A complete list of their products can be attained on the information page of the "Boycott and Defeat Koch Industries" FB page mentioned earlier in this article).

We may not be able to de-fund them, but we can at least make an impact in the one thing that matters to them, their money.  As a Christian minister, I don't want to see their agenda continue to gain ground.  It steps on the least of these, favors The Powers That Be over individuals and sets up a social and political structure that values some people much more than others.  Please help send them a message.

OMG this has got to be the biggest most Left propaganda! I've seen this morning. So this article appears to be demonizing a manufacture for what? For using it's profits to influence political direction? Oh like the New York Times doesn't spend it's profit dollars in concert with the DNC? Peoples your emotions are being exploited for a political agenda, and this doesn't disturb you? Please tell me how many poor people create jobs in anything beyond the government social program? It's been your desire to have more with out working for it that will breed your hate and anger towards those that have been successful. Both sides influence our government. Defend your thesis to how you would like your government to be. Don't demonize those you oppose. You'll only support another's tyranny.

Joanie B, Thanks for your opinion. I'm simply encouraging people to not give their money to companies that support agendas with which they disagree. Since money is beginning to run our country (or has been for a while), this is a completely reasonable way to voice our opinion.

Mark, you sound a little apologetic to Joanie B, but I don't feel there's a need to be. The Kochs are not simply innocent entreprenuers needing a break. (BTW, just to clarify, they didn't achieve their success, their father did.) They buy their politicians to encourage them to change laws that exist for the public good so that they can continue to spew pollutants into the public air and water ways. Thus, they want the public to pay for a portion of their business model by making us pay for the clean up. They buy these politicians with nefarious tactics and spread hate, lies, and misinformation to falsify their intentions. And furthermore, you are not the Left. Don't let people like Joanie use that word against you. When we share the value that Jesus taught us, why is that being Left? I know people who can't even describe what left is, but they think it is really bad. People like the Koch brothers did that, so they've reduced our collective knoweledge and conversation, by funding the propoganda will destroy us. People like Joanie don't seem to be able to accept any new information except what they've been told to think. I wouldn't be surprised if she wasn't a paid propagandist. They can't even see the forest for the trees when something goes against their brain-washing thinking. But that's why she's so aggitated. Stand up to these people. They need it.

Great bit of information. I will definitely not be supporting these libertarian ideologues who are working to destroy everything great about our country in the name of massive profits. I'm proud to be a "bleeding-heart" (compassionate), "tree-hugging" (pro-environment) "socialist" (socially responsible progressive). I stand with all people who put people and the environment over greed, power and profit. I feel really sorry for people who think that money is so all-important that caring about the environment and the poor are bad things. You rock. Keep up the great work.

As one of the protesters from this weekend's Uncloak the Kochs rally, I want to commend you for a wonderfully factual dissertation of these brothers' purchasing of our politicians and Supreme Court Justices. Thank you for helping to bring their dirty tactics of oppression and pollution to the forefront! Way to go, keep up the good work!

I see value in and respect all views that have been expressed. Let's discard words like 'demonize' and phrases like "these libertarian ideologues who are working to destroy everything great about our country." Does anybody really believe anyone is out to "destroy every thing great about our country?" If all of us didn't love our country, none of us would be writing this stuff. Everybody, take step back and a deep breath. Everybody wants what is best for our country, right? It is a great service to make public exactly where money is going. We all need to know that in order to make informed decisions. No need to call names or get emotional at all. There does seem to be a great gap between the super rich and the poor, even the struggling second class. And it appears to be a problem that is doing the country harm in general. I have no idea what the solution is. I DO know that more polarization and back and forth attack will guarantee the problems get worse and we will all suffer for it. We're like kids in the school yard, "Did too, did not." And getting nowhere. Campaign finance reform is the first essential step. As long as money buys political favors, the American spirit suffers.

Amen to campaign finance reform, but good luck getting it enacted. Public financing of campaigns would be better than corporations lobbyists swaying them. The Koch Bros. had a meeting including two Supreme Court justices who were working on Citizens United (what an ironic name). Checks and balances? This weekend in Palm Springs they met with an influential Republican congressman. Now we hear that Wall St billionaires are manipulating the price of food (wheat, rice, etc) by buying futures for more food than exists. And the right doesn't want financial/Wall St reform. Pretty soon the American middle class will be in the streets protesting like the Egyptians. Corporatism is the enemy of the people, sending jobs to Asia, strangling health care and much more. Guys like the Koch Bros. are really bad guys. What can we do about them? Getting the issue out into the public attention is a good start.

Whenever "Libertarians" talk about "tyranny" and how awful government intervention and regulation is, I just roll my eyes and tune out. They said "force, fraud, aggression," blah, blah blah should not be used by the government on people or businesses... NONSENSE. What about insurance companies that kick customers off their rolls and leave them for dead? Or Chemical companies that dump their toxic waste into our drinking water. That sounds like force, fraud, aggression and tyranny to me. Yes, Democrats are owned by their campaign contributors, but at least they are TRYING to help the poor and middle class and help them get back on their feet with new jobs.

Joanie, as of the past umteen and more years, corporations have been hoarding money and taking jobs elsewhere. Where have you been. I watch the markets everyday, and these corporations have huge surplus profits they are sitting on. Boycotting is a tool used against any busines that has proven unjust. During the era of Civil Rights, boycotting was done all the time and can prove effective. As of late, I joined the Boycott against BP. It put a dent in their profits. In case you haven't noticed we are next to having no middle Class.Bottom line corporations don't provide jobs either.

My only reservation to your article is describing the Koch brothers as Libertarian with a "big L" (ie part of the Libertarian Party) As a member of the LP nationally I can attest that while we are for "very low taxes..." universally applying towards all equally, without favoritism. The Koch brothers are not Libertarian in that they actually deny the individual his due diligence and equality, in order to keep their accustomed status and wealth.

True Libertarianism and policy statements imho must look first at the individual and their rights. If they are not trumped then it slides down to step 2 business rights to operate within reason and simplified regulations and 3 open and small government issues and complete funding of those functions. Even with the Governor Walker scandals some Libertarians jumped on the business rights bandwagon but they are starting as most Libertarians do to coil back and look at the facts and realize there is more than meets the eye in the middle of the curd pile.

I would like to directly assert that "...very little corporate regulations, nearly no environmental regulations..." doesnt apply to Libertarians, the issue is simplified and easy for a high school graduate or common man to understand and regulations applied universally across the way, do away with the tier system of regulation based on how many employees are hired by said company. I hope that helps express my only reservation and I appreciate the information. On other pointe, Im an environmentalist and most of the LPers I know, including myself, both on the national and state level are home farmers, both in the urban and rural areas. They do it partially due to genetic controls over our food source and too save money on groceries to give to charity and feed the homeless with our excess and while LPers believe in open and free trade we also believe in core economic sustainability as essential and prudent.

Just like many cults refer to themselves as "religions", the Koch brothers have declared themselves to be "Libertarians." I believe they are actually Extremist Capitalists. Accumulation of wealth is all that matters, beyond politics and ethics. As they accumulate wealth, crush opponents and burn the environment, their actions are becoming too dangerous to ignore. I'm from Wichita, KS too, but count me as one of the people who believe that the Kochs are really not interested in Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians or in any of their manufactured political parties or "patriotic" organizations. We should work together to hold them accountable for more than just their swollen bank accounts and similarly bloated egos.

Nobody is insulting GP (My house was built with GP products). We are not happy with the way the Koch brothers are spending their profits in ways that affect our lives in negative ways.

I sincerely hope your husband's job does not go overseas. If it does, I hope he is able to find another one quickly.

I am also from Wichita, and I would challenge the poster above to ask "why" the Koch brothers "give back to their community." Corporations have historically donated to surface level projects as a distraction from the real harm they do to the working class. Any corporation that rallies against unions is *not* helping their community -- regardless of how many community centers they buy.

One again the left wants you to boycott something they don't like even if it puts someone else out of a job. Sounds like all these think tanks, network foundations, political groups, georgia pacific, their oils pipelines, and refineries that the Koch brothers are putting more people to work than Obama's stimulus plan

@ johnny cavitt, the thing is, of course their many businesses *have to offer jobs to run them; the dark side of all the many jobs is that the Koches fight against you -- against their own employees and their families -- by doing everything they can to end collective bargaining, which is a worker's only serious means of job protection. Why are you protecting something that works to your and your family's detriment?

(Also, FWIW the worldofkoch website has been taken down, no explanation.)

I would prefer the direct approach myself. If you don't like what the Koches do with their money, send them a letter... by boycotting, aren't you hurting the folks who work for them? who may be innocent "Christians" like yourself?

Individual boycotts will do little and take way too much effort to be effective. What we need to do is hold a few rallies across the nation at select Walmarts. And these rallies need to be HUGE!! Every parking spot at the Walmarts need to be taken up so no one can park. Every entrance needs to have so many people in front of them that that store makes almost NO sales that day. And we demand that Walmarts stop carrying all products associated with the Kochs for a specified period of time (I would say 5 years would work) then we would be causing problems for the Kochs. Especially if we continue doing it until ALL retailers agree to stop carrying those products, THAT would be a consumer shot heard round the world.
It's not enough for us to just boycott these products. We need to get the retailers to stop carrying these products.
