It's a lot quicker to run up stream. Trying to swim upstream is exhausting! I know y'all know what I mean!

all too often, running upstream isn't possible and swimming is the only way to go. Procuring justice is exhausting.

Janet, as I understand it, that expression/metaphor/parable is a very old one with no known source. The best truths are often from Anonymous. ,,, That guy had all the best lines. ; )
